This clever IKEA hack completes Kerry’s dream laundry room
Over a year ago, Kerry attempted her biggest IKEA hack, transforming her old kitchen into a super functional laundry room. Recently, she added another clever tool to the space—a fold-up clothes drying rack for fabrics that need to be air-dried.
She says on her Instagram account that she’s been looking for a drying rack for a while, and all the larger racks were a bit out of budget. Moreover, they “didn’t fit the space I had in mind, so we decided to make one to match the rest of the utility,” she added. “It was so simple. We used a PAX FORSAND door and two KOMPLEMENT trouser hangers.”
The laundry drying rack is perfect for small spaces. It folds up against the wall when not in use and has two levels so you can dry more clothes. The DIY project came in at just over £100 ($128).
Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how she transformed an IKEA PAX door and KOMPLEMENT trouser hangers into a functional and stylish laundry drying rack:

2x KOMPLEMENT trouser hangers
Hinges (steel butt hinges 75mm x 52mm)
Rope (Kerry used Rothley Waxed Cotton Sash Cord in white, 6mm X 10m)

How to make a 2-tier laundry drying rack
Step 1: Choose the right location
Identify the ideal location on your wall for the drying rack. Ensure it is easily accessible and has enough space for the racks to drop down and hang freely. Ideally, site it near a window, which will help clothes dry quicker.
Step 2: Attach the trouser hangers
Decide on the placement of the trouser hangers on the front of the FORSAND door. Space the racks with adequate clearance from each other so clothes can hang down from the rails.
Mark the screw holes for the hinges on both the door and the trouser hangers. You can use a tape measure to ensure they are level.
Using the drill and appropriate screws, securely attach the hinges to the door and each trouser hanger.
Step 3: Add Ropes for Suspension
The ropes will support the weight of the hangers and wet clothes, so choose a sturdy anchor point on the door. Drill holes on the FORSAND door and the sides of the KOMPLEMENT trouser hanger for the ropes to thread through.
Cut two equal lengths of rope based on your chosen height, plus a bit more material to make a knot. Thread one end of each rope to the drilled anchor point on the door. Knot the rope at the back of the door. Thread the other end of the rope to the trouser hanger.
Adjust the length of the ropes so the racks are level when dropped down and secure with a knot on the inside of the pants rack.
Step 4: Magnetic Catches:
Locate the spots on the FORSAND door where the magnets will hold the trouser hangers upright when not in use.
Attach the self-adhesive magnets to the door at the chosen spots. Ensure they line up on the trouser hanger for a secure closure.
Step 5: Hang the FORSAND Door:
Install keyhole hangers to the back of the PAX door. Then, hang the door to the wall using appropriate screws on the wall.
Voilà! Your DIY drying rack is complete.
Additional Tips:
Consider adding wall hooks below the drying rack for additional hanging space for delicates or air-drying shoes.
Paint the PAX FORSAND door to match your utility room decor.
